Stone

_

Stone is one of the easy, beautiful and widely used materials in buildings that has been had optimum use for a long time. There are variety of stone coatings  such as travertine, granite, sandstone, porcelain, marble, quartzite, and so on.

With the increase in population, we are always witnessing the increasing expansion of construction in different urban areas. Unlike the old buildings that had a simple plan, modern buildings have a unique look and have more attractive architecture.

Designers and architects do their best to use modern materials and styles to make the interior and exterior of the building more beautiful and provide desirable and calm environment and facade of a building is one of the important visual features in building construction.

The exterior facade acts like a veneer for a building that not only protects it from various environmental factors, but also gives it a unique charm and beauty. The unique views that can be seen in the city are the result of months of efforts by experienced and skilled architects who, in addition to providing an attractive environment for residents, make the appearance of the city more modern and elegant.

Various materials are used in the design of the building's facade, including all kinds of stones, wood, bricks, tiles, panels, etc., each item has its own unique advantages and features.

Among all the materials, stone has been used from the past to the present.  High durability and resistance is among its main features . Since exterior facade is one of the parts of the building that is exposed to various factors, stones applied for the facade cladding should be free of cracks, fractures and  porous. if there is a crack or pores to resist dust and rain and further erosion.

High quality stone must have the necessary resistance to water penetration and  to the exposure of chemical and natural environments.

Most people who purchase stone will only follow others advice and will eventually feel dissatisfied over time. Before buying facade stone, you should get acquainted with the types of stones and examine their advantages and disadvantages. In this case, with the essential knowledge, you can purchase type of stone that will clad facade of your building for years.

One test to distinguish a high quality stone from a bad one is to strike the stone with a metal tool.  A without cracks high quality stone makes the sound of glass. glass sound guarantee quality of stone.

Stone claddings which are selected for the exterior facade  must provide high durability and strength. Facade stones are always exposed to sunlight, snow and rain, dust, pollution, cold, heat, humidity, etc. Therefore, high resistant stones are the best option for facades.

Basically, the designers of the exterior of the building, if they design stone cladding facade, their suggestion will be Travertine, Sand Stone and Granite, each of them has its own unique beauty and capabilities. Travertine is cheaper and more durable than mentioned types. In addition, the stone adheres well to the cement, so it is not possible to separate it from the surface.

"Granite" is a type of igneous rock and is available in a variety of colors. This stone has a coarse texture that can be easily seen with the naked-eye. Granite does not absorb contamination and has a high hardness. Because of its low porosity Granite can be used not only in exterior but also in interior humid environments such as bathrooms and toilets.

Travertine, which is a type of sedimentary rock, has a layered texture. This stone has a high adhesion and has colors such as black, blue and gray.

"Travertine stone" has close-grained texture and concerning its layered structure can be cut in two diffident methods including cross cut and vein cut. The "Sand stone" is also a sedimentary rock composed of various sands and minerals. Minerals in this rock include iron silica, calcium carbonate and dolomite. It is highly resistant to weathering and has low water absorption. The bond between mortars and sandstone appears to be low, therefore in order to coat the facade when using it in the facade of the building,  stone scoop clip is used. The sandstone is brownish-gray and yellow.

For facade cladding proper stone should be selected based on climate conditions. In cold regions with snow and frost possibility, rocks that have little porosity sounds more compatible because the ice will cause the rock to disintegrate. In addition, in areas where sandstorms are constantly occurring, the rock is exposed to abrasion which shorten stone longevity, Therefore it is necessary to buy facade stone according to the climatic conditions,. In general, the stone used for building facades should have the following characteristics

  • Minerals components should be carefully examined.
  • Should have good bending and tensile feature
  • Should be easily polished and cut
  • Should have the ability to absorb water properly and bond easily with mortar.
  • Resistant to sunlight Exposure
  • Resistant to Acid rain
  • Resistant to crack or abrasion.
  • It should not have pores to prevent rain or snow easily penetrate into its texture
